"Our aesthetic instincts are engaged in a similar manner whether we view a photograph of a ‘designed object’ or a ‘landscape.’ In both cases, we draw not only upon our sense of the uniqueness or beauty of the subject, but also upon the way in which we experience the design of the space within its framing and our internal judgments regarding the degree of pleasure the composition affords us.
“"Most actual landscapes experienced by us on a regular basis have in effect been influenced by man, either intentionally or otherwise. As such, they are in fact ‘designed’ spaces, albeit in varying degrees of formality or happenstance.
“"Photographs can be appreciated on a variety of levels. One might be drawn to the familiarity of a particular image, or, conversely, to its exoticness. Or it might be the emotional impact of the narrative depicted, the beauty of its forms and color, the mystery it contains, its humor, nostalgia, etc. that makes it resonate with the viewer. However, whenever we find that a photograph really speaks to us, it is meaningful, or because it completely satisfies our aesthetic sense, or because of some combination of the two. The most incredible National Geographic travel photo will certainly please or excite us, but it remains a ‘travel photo’, to decorate our walls, to encourage us to see more of the world, or to save endangered species, for instance. Goals such as these are certainly admirable, but they do not necessarily touch on the innate, unspoken aesthetic elements that can draw us to photographs and make them speak personally to us.”"
Kelly Sinclair About
Kelly Sinclair
Following in my mother's footsteps, I began taking black and white photographs in high school and continued the study of photography while at SUNY Purchase. I recently discovered color photography since switching over to taking digital images, but black and white remains my passion. I love being in nature and take my camera with me on my daily walks. I photograph the stillness of nature and attempt to capture the exquisite beauty inherent in the details.
My photographs have appeared in Chronogram magazine, the Hudson Valley Guide, Black and White magazine and the Catskill Mountain Region Guide, as well as at the Wilder Gallery in Catskill, NY.
