Serena About
Serena Van Rensselaer
Serena'’s intrigue with jewelry began as a young girl, when she used to visit her grandmother and her namesake, Serena. The elder Serena was an extremely talented painter who loved all forms of art. But it was her collection of jewelry that captivated Serena, for she had pieces from around the world, and each piece had a story behind it.
Serena grew up in New Jersey, and went on to study Art History and Cultural Anthropology, before re-visiting her childhood passion of jewelry design in San Miguel D’Allende, Mexico. It was there that she took her first metal class, and fell in love with the creative process. Serena worked, studied and traveled to Europe and the Caribbean, honing her skills as a metal smith.
Serena lived for years in St.Thomas & St. John where she co-owned a gallery. She loved living by the ocean, and found the islands incredibly inspiring. In 1999, she moved to New York City, and settled in the East Village. She thrived on the creative energy in NYC, and opened a studio. She fell in love and she and her husband began to yearn for nature and space. The inspiration that one feels living within nature. In 2005 they found their peaceful oasis; a lovely home in which to live and work in Olive, NY.
In 2007 they had a baby boy; Aziz Skyler who is their greatest joy and inspiration.
Barrett About
Harriet Forman Barrett
My work is a personal, individual statement that connects those of us with the same spiritual needs. It is not just jewelry but a statement of one's self. The figures represent dancers, athletes, and spirit, which are all an expression of the joy of life. The floral work carries the same kind of energy as the figures and therefore can be mixed and matched as "sets". They wonderfully compliment each other. I take great pride in the longevity of my theme, both spiritually and physically.
My sculpture continues this same quest, provoking an even greater depth of conscious thought of our struggles and dualities. Each is a reminder to honor the divine within.
Driscoll About
Jesse Driscoll
Jessie has been making jewelry since childhood. All four of her grandparents made jewelry before her, so it was only natural for her to pick it up and love it. She collected antique jewelry and vintage silver coins, the coins having been a gift from her paternal grandparents, and studied silversmithing at the Woodstock Guild in Woodstock, NY. While obtaining a BA in Psychology at Vanderbilt University, Jessie also studied music and art. This line is the coming together of her skills and inspirations.
To make one of these pieces, the face is sanded off on one side of a coin (except for those pieces with the coin image on both sides) Then using traditional hammering and forging techniques, the shape is formed, the designs are implanted, and the piece is domed with a block and punches. Due to the substantial weight of the coins, there is quite a bit of labor involved. The piece is polished by hand and cast, using the lost wax method. The pieces are immersed in a blackening solution and polished, connected to other pieces and polished once again by hand. The finished piece of jewelry is cleaned and ready to be worn.
J and I about
J & I Jewelry
Born in England, jewelry designer Ian Gibson has spent many years traveling the world absorbing various cultural influences. Schooled in geology and petrology, his love of rocks and fossils was transformational in his exploration of metals. Being completely self taught in the jewelry arts has led him down paths and to conclusions that have garnered his work acclaim for its freshness and originality.
Ian fabricates the various elements from raw materials by hand. Casting processes are not used. Using sterling silver as the base, the collection is developed with touches of semi precious stone, aspects of pearl, and hints of gold. An oxidizing patina is added to many pieces to embellish the hand etched details.
Ian and his wife Jessica formed the core of the company in 2000. They have since grown to a full time staff of seven. Aided by these talented local artisans, the finished work is produced in their studio in Philadelphia.
Lucina K About
Lucina K
Natural themes with a contemporary twist give this line a very distinctive look. "The inspiration for this line comes from the faith and spirit that my Grandmother embodied. As a child I learned through her that creating things nurtures your soul, connects you to God, the creator, and brings joy to others. This line is named after her, in a tribute to the creativity she lived."
